Born at Taos Pueblo, Eva Mirabal studied at the Santa Fe Indian School under Dorothy Dunn before enlisting in the Women's Army Corps in 1943. As a WAC cartoonist she drew the strip G.I. Gertie — making her one of the first women with her own published comic strip — and painted a building-sized mural, A Bridge of Wings, for the Army Air Service Command in Ohio. She returned to Taos Pueblo in 1949 and studied at the Taos Valley Art School under Louis Ribak and Beatrice Mandelman.
