The Millicent Rogers Museum opens Where Silver Meets the Sky: What the Body Carries on Sept. 12 — an exhibit built around contemporary Indigenous artists responding to the museum's own holdings on adornment: jewelry, textiles, the objects people actually wear. It runs through Jan. 31, 2027.
Rogers assembled the core of that collection in the six years before her death in 1953, working with weavers and silversmiths she met around Taos. She recorded sources and techniques in field notebooks. The notebooks don't say whether the people she recorded them from had any say in how the objects would later be shown.
Where Silver Meets the Sky doesn't reframe Rogers, and it doesn't need to. It just adds a second set of voices to the room — living ones, responding directly to what a collector decided was worth keeping.
